WHAT IS GYUDON?
Gyudon, which translate to “beef bowl” in Japanese, is a popular comfort dish consisting of thinly sliced beef and sliced onions simmered in a sweet and savory sauce, then served over a bowl of steamed rice. The sauce is typically a mixture of soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and dashi stock. Gyudon is a simple yet delicious and budget-friendly meal that can be made in under 30 minutes.
INGREDIENTS:
- Beef, thinly sliced
- Onion
- Water
- Soy Sauce
- Mirin
- Sugar
- Hondashi (you can get it from local Asian grocery store or online)
- Garnish: green onion, pickled ginger, sesame seeds, egg yolk
DIRECTIONS:
Prepare the ingredients
First, thinly slice the onion and chop green onions. Set it aside.
Take the beef slices out of the freezer if you are using frozen meat.
Simmer the Sauce
In a skillet or pan, combine water, soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and hondashi. Turn on the heat and cook until sugar and hondashi dissolve.
Add thinly sliced onion to the pan and cook until they become translucent.
Add the Beef
Add the thinly sliced beef to the pan and spread it out evenly on top of the onion. Cover with a lid and simmer for a few minutes, or until beef is cooked through.
Remove the lid and get ready to serve.
Assemble and Serve:
Serve the beef and onion mixture over a bowl of cooked rice. Garnish the bowl with pickled ginger, chopped green onion, white sesame seeds, and an egg yolk if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!

Ingredients
- 1/2 lb beef, thinly sliced
- 1/2 onion, sliced
- 1/2 cup water
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp mirin
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp hondashi
For Serving:
- Cooked rice
- 1 Green onion, chopped
- Pickled ginger
- Sesame seeds
- 1 egg yolk
Instructions
- Thinly slice the onion and set it aside.
- In a skillet or pan, add water, soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and hondashi. Cook and bring to a simmer until sugar and hondashi dissolved.
- Add sliced onion to the pan and cook until translucent.
- Even spread the sliced beef on top of the onion. Cover with a lid and simmer for a few minutes, until beef is brown. Remove the lid.
- Serve onion and beef over steamed rice. Garnish with chopped green onion, pickled ginger, sesame seeds, and an egg yolk. Serve hot and enjoy!
