Description

Gyudon is an easy and comforting dish consisting of thinly sliced beef and onion simmered in a sweet and savory sauce, and served over a bowl of steamed rice.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 lb beef, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 onion, sliced
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp hondashi

For Serving:

  • Cooked rice
  • 1 Green onion, chopped
  • Pickled ginger
  • Sesame seeds
  • 1 egg yolk

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the onion and set it aside.
  2. In a skillet or pan, add water, soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and hondashi. Cook and bring to a simmer until sugar and hondashi dissolved.
  3. Add sliced onion to the pan and cook until translucent.
  4. Even spread the sliced beef on top of the onion. Cover with a lid and simmer for a few minutes, until beef is brown. Remove the lid.
  5. Serve onion and beef over steamed rice. Garnish with chopped green onion, pickled ginger, sesame seeds, and an egg yolk. Serve hot and enjoy!
