Wontons are a classic and versatile dish in Chinese cuisine. They are perfect for soups, frying, or steaming. What makes they fun and special is the variety of ways you can fold them. Whether you are making a simple triangle for a quick wonton soup or folding a bonnet fold for a wonton party, the different styles of folding can elevate both the presentation and the texture of your wontons.

WHAT KIND OF WONTON WRAPPERS TO BUY:
Look for square shape wonton wrappers at the frozen section of your local grocery stores. I use Dynasty brand wonton wrappers in most of my wonton recipes. You can also find Hong-Kong style wonton wrappers (yellow color) and Shanghai style wonton wrappers (white color) in your local Asian supermarkets. You will have to defrost the wonton wrappers before using them.
HOW TO FOLD WONTONS: 6 DIFFERENT METHODS
1. MONEY POUCH (Crunch/Ruffled Purse)
This is my favorite way to fold wontons because it is fast and you don’t need to wet the edges of wonton wrappers. This is a great way to fold when boiling wontons.
Use a tongue depressor or wooden stick to scoop 1 tsp of wonton filling, and place it onto the center of a wonton wrapper. Use your other hand to wrap the filling around and make a fist to seal the edges. Squeeze your hands tight to make sure that the wonton wrappers are sealed, then slide the wooden stick out.
2. TRIANGLE
This is by far the EASIEST way to fold wontons and it is perfect for beginners. Simply use your finger to wet the edges of the wonton wrapper, and then fold it over to form a triangle. Press the edges together to make sure they are sealed.
3. GOLDEN MONEY (Bonnet/Ingot)
Place 1-2 tsp of wonton filling onto the center of the wrapper. Use your finger to wet the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper over to form a rectangle. Grab the two bottom corners and wet the corners with a little water. Bring the bottom corners together and pinch to seal.
4. SAILORS HAT (Little Boat)
This method is similar to the golden money method (see above), except that instead of folding the wonton wrapper into a rectangle, you fold it into a triangle shape first. Place 1-2 tsp of filling in the center of the wonton wrapper and brush the edges with water. Fold the wrapper over to form a triangle. Wet the two corners, pull them toward each other and pinch to seal.
5. GIFT BOX (Pyramid)
This is a popular way to fold when steaming or deep frying wontons. This method can hold a large amount of filling than other other methods.
Place a spoonful of filling in the center of the wonton wrapper and wet the edges with water. Lift and pinch the opposite corners together, make sure to seal the edges to prevent leaking and pinch the tip together.
6. ENVELOPE
This method may look intimidating at first, but it is actually pretty simple! First, place 1-2 tsp of filling in the center of the wonton wrapper and wet the edges with water. Take one corner of the wrapper and bring it toward the middle of the filling. Fold (the filling side) it over again and seal the side edges. Wet the two bottom corners with a little water and bring them toward each other to seal.
TIPS FOR PERFECT WONTON FOLDING:
- USE WATER AS GLUE: Dip your index finger in water and wet the wedges of the wonton wrappers before pressing them together. The moisture helps ensure the wonton is sealed tightly. (*Exception: If you are using the tongue depressor method, you do not need to moister the edges. The filling should be sticky enough to seal the edges).
- DONT OVERFILL: Too much filling will make the wontons hard to seal, make holes in the wrapper, and cause them to burst while cooking. 1-2 tsp of filling should be enough.
- PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: Some folds are easier than the others, but don’t get discouraged! Try different methods and see which one you like best and keep practicing. The more wontons you make, the better you’ll get!
